ECOSYSTEMS

Restinga
This vital coastal sandy ecosystem begins just beyond the beach line and features both shrub and tree vegetation. Ponta do Curral is home to the largest arboreal restinga forest in Valença, showcasing prominent species like Maçaranduba and Jataípeba.

INITIATIVES
Guabim Environmental Protection Area
Established in 1992 through an agreement among the State of Bahia, the Valença Municipal Government, and Ponta do Curral, the Guiabim APA (Environmental Protection Area) plays a key role in conserving coastal ecosystems and protecting local biodiversity.
The APA sets forth the principles and rules for project development and operations in the region, aiming to ensure that all activities are sustainable and do not negatively impact the environment, in order to preserve the region's stunning natural landscape.
Tio Mundico Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN)
In line with its commitment to environmental preservation and acknowledging the region’s ecological significance, Ponta do Curral has established a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) encompassing over 34 hectares of Atlantic Forest. This protected and monitored area will serve as a natural haven for scientific research and environmental education.

With 275 preserved hectares, Ponta do Curral boasts a unique coastal biodiversity, characterized by a forest and restinga mangroves.
At Ponta do Curral, environmental stewardship is a fundamental principle. In addition to safeguarding natural attributes, including biomes, fauna, and flora, we have established initiatives to uphold these commitments in the long run.

Mangrove
Surrounding us, this ecosystem acts as a crucial nursery for marine species and plays a vital role in sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Ponta do Curral develops initiatives that support the preservation of these environments and the conservation of local biodiversity.

Estuary
Located in the estuary of the Taperoá Canal, Ponta do Curral sits at the confluence of several significant rivers, with the Una River being especially prominent. This estuarine environment mixes salty seawater with fresh river water, creating a habitat that supports a diverse range of marine life.
Beach
Ponta do Curral's beaches are distinguished by their unique characteristics. One side faces the exposed coastline with its crashing waves, while the other is bordered by the tranquil waters of the Taperoá Canal. Spanning 12 kilometers, these beaches serve as a habitat for various bird species and marine life.

Seedling Center
Recognizing the importance of preserving our forests, we established a plant nursery to grow seedlings of native species for use in landscaping and forest enrichment. Since 2014, we have donated thousands of these seedlings to local partners for the restoration of degraded areas, the revitalization of public spaces, and environmental education programs in regional schools.
Vegetable Garden
As part of the “Ser” project, the Ponta do Curral Vegetable Garden was sparked by the syntropic farming system. Mimicking the structure and functionality of natural ecosystems by utilizing key species to improve soil conditions, it integrates food cultivation with sustainable and regenerative environmental practices through agroforestry. Devised as an edible garden, it serves as a space for cultivating produce while fostering a direct understanding of our consumption habits.

Environmental Education
Environmental education plays a key role in enhancing awareness and fostering ecological responsibility. Throughout the development of our environmental education program, we are empowering our team, local schools, and the community with the knowledge and skills necessary for the protection and conservation of the environment.

Composting / Organic Recylcing
Embracing the principles of circular economy, we compost organic waste to produce nutrient-dense fertilizer. This compost is then used in our vegetable garden, plant nursery, and landscaping projects.
Beach Cleanups
Ponta do Curral conducts beach cleanups twice a week and is actively involved in all community beach cleanup initiatives and environmental education programs in Guaibim.
UNA
To advance its socio-environmental initiatives, Ponta do Curral collaborates with UNA, a platform that designs and promotes projects in partnership with local communities and public and private organizations. By linking these stakeholders, UNA fosters a collaborative approach to addressing key regional issues. At Ponta do Curral, UNA has spearheaded various initiatives, including educational workshops for youth, regular seedling donations, beach clean-ups, and support for the artisan community in Baixa Alegre.
